You’ve been through CNA training. You’ve prepared for every possible situation you can. You are ready to begin practicing the knowledge you’ve gained in a real career. Even if you’ve landed an interview, though, you may not be as ready as you think you are.
What’s stopping you? One simple question that is asked in almost every single interview, no matter what field or position:
What are your weaknesses?
Sure, it may be phrased in several different ways, but after CNA training, this question will be one of the hardest for you to answer. After all, no one likes to think about what they aren’t good at. Most individuals would rather focus on the positives in their career, and even when they briefly consider an area they struggle in, it is only to consider how they might improve.
Being honest about your weaknesses after CNA training might be difficult, but there are a few things you can do to answer the question not only honestly, but easily.
Weaknesses After CNA Training
- Don’t Try to Lie- Lying, twisting your words around so your weaknesses are actually strengths, or refusing to answer the question are not options during your interview after CNA training. Your interviewer isn’t going to believe that your greatest weakness is working too hard; in fact, they may struggle not to laugh. While you might think these tactics are an easy way to get around a question, you interviewer isn’t dumb, and won’t take kindly to them.
- Discover Your Weaknesses- Before you even go into the interview after CNA training, figure out what your weaknesses are. Remember, the weakness should be related to your job, not your personal life. Also, weaknesses and deficiencies are different. You may not necessarily have certain skills that are required for the job, but if you can learn them, they aren’t really weaknesses. For instance, if the job requires you to know Spanish so you can care for Spanish-speaking patients after CNA training, you can learn Spanish and so it is a deficiency because it is a temporary problem.
- Know What They Want- When you go into a job interview, you need to understand why your employer is asking this question. He wants to make sure you are going to be a good employee, and he wants to find out if he has anything to worry about- before he hires you. When you are discussing your weaknesses after CNA training, focus as much as you can on the positive. If there is a task you are not comfortable doing, say so by using these words: If you were to give me a choice between performing task A and task B, I would prefer and be more comfortable with performing task A.
- Explain Yourself- If you don’t think you have any weakness (after all, you practically sailed through CNA training!) then you can tell your interviewer so, but you need to frame the answer so it doesn’t seem like you are being cocky. Tell them you have thought about the question, and you don’t see any problems right now they should be concerned about.
