CNA Training & Your State Exam
One thing that many students enrolled in a CNA training program worry about is the final exam with the state. This is a very important test and passing it is necessary to your future career, but there are several ways to prepare for the exam. The majority of students who take both parts of the class seriously and review the information are likely to do well. If there are any areas that you are unsure of, or find yourself getting confused about how to do any particular act, this is a good time to ask your instructor.
CNA Training, Remember the Lesson About Privacy
When someone is in the hospital or a nursing home, they already have lost some of their privacy. They are likely to be sharing a room with a stranger and are being taken care of by people they do not know. When you are taking your CNA training skills test, it is very important to do everything possible to provide the patient with privacy. That means you should remember to knock, to close the curtains around the patient, if possible, and cover up the patient as you provide their care. Also remember to explain the procedure to the patient. As you learned in CNA training, every patient should be aware of what is coming next and have the opportunity to decline treatment.
Don’t Forget About Safety After CNA Training
The most important thing to learn during CNA training is how to guarantee the safety of the patient and your own safety. If you cannot take care of your patient safely, without injuring yourself, you cannot take care of your patient. There is no shame in asking for someone’s help. Steps to guaranteeing your own safety includes:
- Wearing non-skid shoes that fit properly and that are in good condition
- Using a gait belt, also known as a transfer belt, with the patients who can ambulate
- Ensuring that any restraints that are being used, even the bed rails, are in good shape
- Leaving the bed in the appropriate position, at the right height
CNA Training and Cross-contamination
There is a heavy emphasis on performing the personal care that patients are likely to have trouble with. That means that it would be very easy to transfer germs from one patient to the next, so washing your hands, using gloves and disposing of soiled clothing or bedding in the appropriate way is going to have an enormous impact on your test score.
Responsible Treatment of Equipment
It’s very important to know what equipment you will need, how to use each item and how to care for and clean each item. During the hands on portion of your exam, you’ll be graded on exactly how you handle items like thermometers and blood pressure cuffs. Did you remember to place a fresh, sanitary shield over your thermometer before use?
Find out What the Most Common Skill Tests are After CNA Training
Your instructor is likely to be aware of which items are most often part of the skills test exam for your particular area and may be willing to let you in on these insights. Although you certainly need to be proficient at every skill, it is a good idea to spend extra time practicing the ones that are most likely to be part of the skills test.
CNA Training and Basic Hygiene
It almost goes without saying, but unfortunately it cannot. It is very important to practice good personal hygiene, both before you go to work and while you are at work. That means that showering, with clean hair, deodorant and wearing clean clothes to work is necessary. It is equally important to wash your hands after eating, drinking, smoking, using the bathroom, and upon entering or leaving a patient’s room.
CNA training provides a great deal of information in a brief period of time. Studying, attention to detail and practicing your new skills will allow you to pass your exam and embark on your new career.
