You know what one of THOSE days feels like. Call lights are ringing every five seconds, patients are impatiently screaming for your attention, and the charge nurse for your shift has a look in her eye; you don’t know what that look means, but you duck into the linen closet as she walks by anyway.
As you run yourself ragged through eight hours, barely stopping to complete an entire thought, you might begin to wonder why in the world you ever decided CNA training was a good idea. Before you begin questioning every aspect of your decision to enter this rewarding and fascinating career field, however, let’s get one thing straight: CNA training and your career are not to blame for these types of days.
These days can happen anywhere and in any career. There are simply some days when the little things become big things, where everyone is on edge, and when you can feel overwhelmed.
While it often seems like you are barely hanging on during these days after CNA training, they pass just as quickly and quietly as they arrive. In the meantime, there are several steps you can take to help you survive one of those days after CNA training.
Surviving Those Days After CNA Training
- Ask for Help- If you are feeling overwhelmed, stress, and just plain tired, then don’t try to be SuperCNA. You can’t do everything by yourself, and sometimes it is safer and wiser to trust in the help of others. After CNA training, learn how to identify when you need help. Don’t try to tackle heavy or combative patients on your own; find others who have completed CNA training and will be willing to help you to assist so you don’t throw your back out.
- Prioritize- You’ve heard it said that the nursing career is a 24 hour job, and you understand this means your patients require round-the-clock care. However, since your shift is only 8 hours long, why are you trying to provide 24 hours worth of care? When you begin the shift, make a list of the most important tasks that need to be completed. Do those and save the extras for the end of the shift. If you can’t get to them, make sure the next shift knows so they can understand their priorities as well.
- Take Care of Yourself- It isn’t easy surviving one of those days after CNA training. In fact, you may be so busy with answering demands and call lights that you forget to care for yourself. Go back to step two and make yourself a priority. You need to hydrate, you need to use the bathroom, and you need to eat. Don’t wait until your day is half over and you have a full bladder to run to the bathroom.
After CNA Training: You Can Survive
It might not seem like it at first, but you can survive Those days. And even at their worst, you need to remember that they don’t last. Tomorrow is another day, and although you may wake up with a few stiff muscles from running up and down the halls, a new day offers the possibility of a better future after CNA training.
